Gojo Coloring Pages

These Gojo coloring pages are fan-made drawings of the white haired, blindfolded teacher doing ordinary things. He walks down a long flight of shrine steps under a torii gate, points at the board in a classroom of empty desks, eats noodles at a counter stall, and sits on a rooftop rail with the city behind him. He carries the shopping up an outdoor stair, falls asleep sitting upright on a train, walks a snowy street with his hands in his pockets, and stands under a cherry tree while the petals come down.

The students are here too, unnamed on purpose. He sits with one on the steps of a training hall with a towel and two water bottles between them, spars with another in padded mitts, holds an umbrella over one in the rain, crouches to feed a stray dog behind the gym, watches two of them arm wrestle across a canteen table, and crams into a photo booth with three of them while the strip comes out of the slot. He kneels at the school gate to tie a small pupil's shoelace. Two sheets are portraits on plain paper: the head and shoulders facing forward, and the full figure with arms folded and the coat hem lifting.

Almost every sheet here takes an evening

This is not a collection to hand a six year old, and the measurements are blunt about it. The drawings are places, not figures: a narrow alley hung with lanterns above shuttered shopfronts, a gym with wall bars and a sprung floor, a shrine stall with rows of wooden plaques, a flight of stone steps with a lantern on every post. Each of those carries well over a hundred separate areas, and the alley is the densest thing on this page.

If you want an hour rather than an evening, the middle of the collection is where to look: the run along the river at sunrise, the umbrella in the rain, the tatami room, the swing at dusk. They have a figure and a setting without the architecture.

Two buttons, two ends of the set

Quick to color keeps the sheets on plain backgrounds:

One of those is quick for a reason worth knowing before you print. The full length figure is drawn with the coat as a solid black shape, which is how the character is usually shown, so there is very little left inside it to fill. It makes a striking page and it takes five minutes. The head and shoulders portrait is the true beginner sheet here.

The hair, the blindfold and the uniform

Three things make this character recognizable, and each has a right answer.

• The hair is white, so the best move is to color nothing at all and leave the paper bare. If it looks unfinished, lay the palest gray or the palest blue along the underside of each spike and stop. Yellow turns him into someone else.
• The blindfold is a dark band, near black or very dark navy. Because it covers the eyes, the whole expression sits in the mouth, so keep the line around it clean and do not shade over it.
• The uniform is a black or very dark navy high collared jacket with white piping running down the zip and the sleeves. Leave that piping as bare paper. It is the only thing that keeps the shape readable once the jacket goes dark, and it is what separates him from a black silhouette.

Where a coat is already drawn as a solid black area, it will not take a pale color. Either leave it as it is, which looks deliberate, or work over it with a dark blue or dark violet pencil for a little depth.

The settings have their own colors. A torii gate is vermilion, paper lanterns are red and white, tatami is a pale green gold, a shrine path is gray stone, and cherry blossom is barely pink, which means a very light touch and a lot of white left showing. Coloring a character with a strong silhouette

This is a design built for instant recognition at a distance, and the coloring follows from that.

The silhouette does the work: tall, upright, spiked white hair, a long dark uniform, a blindfold across the eyes. You could black the whole thing in and still know who it is. That means the page is essentially two values, very light hair against very dark uniform, and the contrast between them is the drawing.

So: leave the hair as bare white paper with only a light gray on the underside of each spike. Color the uniform a deep blue-black rather than pure black, which keeps it from going flat and shiny, and leave a thin bare line along the folds.

Everything else on the page should stay quieter than those two things. Backgrounds in these sheets are best kept to a single muted tone.

The hair itself is drawn in clumps, not individual strands, and each clump is a wedge shape. Shade the base of each wedge and leave the tip white, and the spikes separate properly.

What you will not find here

Worth saying plainly, because the series these drawings come from is made for older readers. There is no fighting here. No weapons, no curses, no injuries, nobody in danger. The drawings take the character and the everyday Japan around him, the school, the street, the festival, the train, and leave the rest out. The busiest sheets suit a teenager or an adult because of the line work, not because of what they show.
