One Piece Coloring Pages

These One Piece coloring pages are fan-made drawings of the whole crew doing the work of running a ship. Luffy sits on the figurehead holding his straw hat down against the wind, sleeps in a hammock slung across the hold, climbs the rigging to the lookout and dives off the rail while everyone leans over to watch. Sanji cooks at the galley stove under a rack of hanging pans, carries a tray of plates across a rolling deck and hauls a crate of fish up the side on a rope. Nami draws a map with dividers by lantern light, stands at the wheel in a gust with the rigging pulled tight, trims the orange trees in the deck grove and counts coins into a chest down in the hold.

The rest of the crew have their own jobs. Zoro lifts a stone weight on deck, sleeps sitting against the mast with his three sheathed swords across his knees, and gets lost at a fork in an island path between two sets of blank signposts. Usopp fires his slingshot at a floating target and paints the crew flag on canvas laid flat on the boards. Chopper grinds medicine at a table of jars, crosses a snowy island in a scarf and rides on Zoro's shoulder through the jungle. Robin reads under a parasol and stands among the pillars of a ruined temple. Franky hammers a plank into the deck and mends the rudder from a rowing boat. Brook plays the violin on the stern rail at night and carries the tea in.

Almost every sheet here is the ship

Worth knowing before you print, because it decides who these are for. The subject of most of these drawings is not a figure, it is a place made of repeated lines: rigging, ratlines, deck planking, barrel staves, rope coils, the spokes of a wheel. The wheel sheet and the hammock sheet are the busiest of the lot, and the character standing in them is the smallest part of the work.

Lots of detail above the grid keeps that end, which is most of the collection:

That density is the restful kind rather than the fiddly kind. Nothing in a rope coil or a run of deck boards has to be got exactly right; there is simply a lot of it, and it goes quickly once you settle into it. Sharp colored pencils hold up better than markers over that much line work, and the colored pencil guide compares sets.

Finding the easy ones and the long ones

Quick to color keeps the sheets on plain backgrounds, and there are two of them:

• Luffy Portrait
• Chopper Portrait

The Luffy portrait, with the straw hat tipped back and a wide grin, is the sheet to hand a younger child. The Chopper portrait is the other one, and it is the best page in the collection for a five or six year old: a round face, a hat and very little else.

Coloring the crew

Fans will check these before anything else, so they are worth getting right.

• Luffy: a straw hat with a red band, an open red vest and blue shorts. The hat is the whole character; leave the straw pale and put the band in a strong red.
• Zoro: a green belly wrap over dark trousers, a black bandana tied round one arm, and three sword hilts in green, red and white.
• Nami: orange hair, which is the most recognizable color on the ship, with a tattoo on her left shoulder.
• Sanji: a black suit with a white shirt, blond hair falling over one eye, and the eyebrow that curls.
• Usopp: a long nose, yellow overalls, a bandana and goggles pushed up on his head.
• Chopper: brown fur, a blue nose, and a pink hat with a white cross. Keep the fur light or the face stops reading.
• Robin: black hair and a purple outfit. Franky: blue hair and a bright shirt. Brook: a skeleton in a blue coat and a top hat, with a black afro.
• The flag is a black ground with a white skull, and the skull wears the straw hat. On paper, leave the skull and the hat white and fill the ground dark.

A crew, and why the palettes differ

These pages are drawn as a crew rather than a single hero, and that is useful when printing for more than one child.

Each member has a fixed and quite different palette of reds, greens, blues and yellows, which was a deliberate design choice so that a crowded panel stays readable. It means a group of children can each take a character, color them without consulting each other, and the finished set will still look like it belongs together.

The ship and the sea are where the detail is. Wooden decks and hulls take a warm brown with the planking drawn as darker lines rather than filled separately. Sails are bare paper with shadow only in the folds. Rigging should be left thin and pale, or it eats the drawing.

The sea follows the rule for all water: color it the same blue as the sky, darker, and leave the wave crests as bare paper.

For the characters themselves, the style uses flat color with a hard black outline, so markers suit them better than pencils, and blending works against the look.

What these sheets deliberately leave out

Worth saying plainly, because the series is a long adventure full of fights. There is none of that here. No battles, no injuries, nobody in danger. Zoro carries his swords but they stay sheathed, across his knees or at his hip, and the nearest thing to combat on any sheet is a slingshot aimed at a floating target. The drawings take the crew, the ship and the islands, and leave the fighting out.
