Dragon Coloring Pages

A dragon page comes down to scales, wings and fire, and each of those has a trick that makes it look real on paper. Which dragons suit younger children?

Scales that look like scales

• Pick one direction for the light and leave the top edge of each scale pale or uncolored.
• Use two greens and one warm accent, orange or gold on the belly and horns, instead of six colors. It reads more like a real reptile.
• Darken toward the tail and under the jaw, where the body turns away from the light.
• Skip every third scale on a big page. From a normal distance it looks like a highlight, and it saves a lot of time.

For a metallic dragon, use yellow, ochre and a little brown in the same way, with a streak of bare paper left in each scale.

Wings and fire

A wing is skin stretched between bones, so give the parts between the bones a lighter tone than the body. That one contrast makes a page look finished rather than filled in. For fire, work from yellow at the mouth to orange, then red at the tips, and leave a small white core near the jaw. A realistic dragon for a long evening

Some of the dragons lean realistic. The detailed dragon head has curved horns and a fierce expression, and the winged dragon standing over a cracked shield among fallen banners has the build of a real predator. For realistic dragon coloring pages, borrow a palette from real reptiles rather than a paint box: olive and moss on the back, a sandy belly, and dark brown worked into the creases. Dragons and castles make slow pages as well, because the stonework takes as long as the animal. Lots of detail keeps those, with scales, books and coins all drawn as separate shapes. Western and Chinese dragons

Western dragons have wings, four legs and a heavy body. Chinese dragons are long and snake-like, with short legs, whiskers and a mane, and they are often colored red and gold with pale blue clouds around them. For Lunar New Year, the Chinese dragon among bamboo with its lantern is a natural pick. The two color very differently, which makes a mixed stack a good choice for siblings who want different things.

Invent the dragon's story

The scenes leave a lot unexplained, and that is useful. Why is a wizard reading a scroll at a table with a dragon? Who is the feast of dragons under the chandelier celebrating? Ask a child to answer on the back of the page before they color, then choose colors that fit the story: a grumpy dragon in dull greens, a party dragon in purple and gold. Dragons with other company, like the griffin face to face on a rocky ledge, make good second chapters.

Two dragons, drawn from two different beliefs

Both dragons in this collection are traditional, and they come from cultures that meant opposite things by them.

The Western dragon is a monster. It has four legs and a pair of bat-like wings, it lives in a cave, it hoards treasure, and the stories exist so that someone can kill it. It breathes fire. Its scales are drawn like armour plating, overlapping and hard, and coloring it in dark greens, reds and blacks is faithful to that.

The Eastern dragon, which the coiled cloud-dragon sheet shows, is the opposite. It has no wings and flies regardless. It is long and serpentine, usually drawn with four claws in China and Japan and five on imperial robes. It controls rain and rivers, it brings good fortune, and it is honoured rather than fought. Gold, red, turquoise and white suit it; dark greens make it look like the wrong animal.

One detail carries across both: the scales overlap downwards, like roof tiles, so the shading goes on the lower edge of each scale. Get that right and even a flat color reads as a dragon.
