Flower Coloring Pages

A flower drawing only works if the petals overlap the way they do on the plant. A rose opens in a spiral, a peony crowds its petals into a ball, a dahlia sits in rings like a mandala. Coloring the flower that is actually out that month ties the page to what a child can see outside. Across most of the country, daffodils and tulips come first, in spring. Peonies follow in late spring. Roses, lavender, poppies and sunflowers carry the summer, and dahlias, cosmos and chrysanthemums hang on into fall, after most other beds are finished. Timing shifts with the climate, so a Florida garden and a Minnesota one will not agree.

That makes a simple garden journal: once a week, color the flower blooming nearest your door and write the date beside it. By October the folder is a record of the year, and a child starts noticing which flower is next.

The real colors of these flowers

• Sunflowers: yellow petals, a dark brown center, and a lighter brown ring around the edge of the seeds.
• Poppies: red or orange petals with a black center. The dried seed head is gray-green.
• Lavender: purple-blue buds on gray-green stalks, not bright green.
• Cornflowers are a clear blue, which makes the daisies in the same bouquet look whiter.
• Daffodils: pale yellow outer petals and a deeper yellow or orange trumpet.
• Pansies are two-toned, often purple with a yellow center and dark marks at the middle.
• Hydrangeas are blue, pink or mauve, and a single head can hold two of those. On the common garden kind, acidic soil tends to turn them blue and alkaline soil pink.
• Geraniums are usually red or pink, with round leaves that have a darker band inside the edge.

In the pot and garden scenes, color the setting (wood, brick, glass or grass) in quiet browns and grays so the blooms stay the brightest thing on the page. Glass, like the mason jar of tulips, stays almost white, with the stems inside a little paler than the stems above.

How to keep a flower from looking flat

Use two tones of the same color: the lighter one across the whole petal, the darker only where the petal meets the center or tucks under the one in front. Leave the outer edge of each petal a little lighter and the bloom picks up depth without any blending. Leaves take the same treatment: a mid green, and a darker green along the central vein.

How a flower is put together

Flowers are easier to color once you can see the parts, and there are only a few.

The petals sit in a ring, and in most flowers there is a fixed number of them: buttercups and roses have five, lilies six, daisies many. Counting before coloring is worth it, because the eye notices an uneven ring even when it cannot say why.

The center is not a blob. On a daisy or a sunflower it is hundreds of tiny flowers packed into a disc, arranged in two sets of spirals running in opposite directions. Follow one spiral with a pencil and the center stops being a brown circle.

Sepals are the small green leaves that wrapped the bud and are still there underneath the open flower. Coloring them a different green from the leaves is a small touch that makes a drawing look observed.

Leaves have a main vein and branching side veins, and the shape of that branching is how you tell one plant from another. Rose leaves come in odd-numbered sets along a stem, usually five or seven, with a toothed edge.

One coloring rule covers all of it: petals are lightest at the tip and deepest at the base, where they join the center. Press harder as you work inwards and the flower opens off the page.
