Capybara Coloring Pages

A capybara does very little, and does it with total calm, which is most of its charm. These free printable capybara coloring pages lean into that. The capybaras soak, nap, float and let other animals climb on them, so every drawing has a slow, easy mood that suits a quiet table. Some sheets show one round cute capybara on plain paper with big shapes to fill. Others build a full scene around it, with reeds, lily pads, steam and snow, which gives older kids and adults something to settle into for an hour.

Why are capybaras so calm with other animals?

Capybaras are the largest living rodent, about the size of a large dog, and they come from the grasslands, rivers and marshes of South America. They live in groups and spend much of the day grazing on grass and water plants. Birds often stand on their backs to pick off insects, and the capybara simply lets them. That tolerance, and the photos it produces, explains the pages with ducklings, turtles and bunnies. The monkey and snow monkey scenes are playful inventions, so it is worth telling children which friends a wild capybara would actually meet.

What is the orange on its head, and the hot spring?

In winter, several zoos in Japan run warm baths for their capybaras and float yuzu, a small citrus fruit, in the water. The animals sit in the bath with their eyes half closed, and a keeper or visitor sometimes balances a fruit on one head. The capybara hot spring pages come from that tradition. Color the yuzu a clear yellow, a little paler than an orange, and leave the steam as bare paper.

Built for the water

A capybara is semi-aquatic. Its feet are slightly webbed, and its eyes, ears and nostrils sit high on its head, so it can stay almost completely underwater with just the top of its face showing, the way a hippo does. Look for that on the swimming page among the cattails. It is a good detail to point out before a child starts coloring the water.

Coloring a capybara coat

A real capybara is reddish brown to tan, and its hair is coarse and fairly sparse rather than fluffy. A warm brown pencil with a little orange under it gets close. Lay a light base over the whole body, then add short strokes in the direction the hair grows, from the nose back over the head and down the sides. Press a little harder along the back and under the chin, and keep the nose and feet a darker brown.

Water around a swimming capybara looks best in horizontal strokes of light blue, with a small ring of paper left white where the body meets the surface. On a kawaii page, do the opposite: keep the color flat and soft, one even layer per shape, and let the pink cheeks be the only accent.

A capybara lesson for a classroom

For a rainforest or South America unit, give each child a capybara and have them draw the country or river where it lives on the back. For younger groups, cut out the finished animals from the friends pages and sort them into two piles: animals a capybara could meet in the wild, and animals it could not. The birds, ducks and turtles go in one pile, the snow monkeys and puppy in the other. The world's largest rodent, and why everything likes it

The capybara is a rodent the size of a large dog, weighing up to sixty-five kilos, and almost everything about it comes back to water.

Its eyes, ears and nostrils sit high on the head, in a line, so it can float almost entirely submerged and still see, hear and breathe. It has partly webbed feet and can stay underwater for several minutes, which it does to escape anything that wants to eat it. Its coat is coarse and dries fast.

The famous calm is real and has a reason: capybaras are prey animals that live in large groups and have essentially no defences, so sitting still and tolerating company is a better strategy than panicking. Birds ride on them and eat their parasites, which suits both. The photographs of monkeys, turtles and cats sitting on capybaras are not staged.

They are also coprophagous, eating their own droppings in the morning to get a second pass at tough grass, which is a fact every nine-year-old wants to know.

For coloring: the coat is a warm reddish-brown, coarse enough to show long strokes, paler on the belly and around the muzzle. The ears are small and round, and the animal has no tail at all, which is the detail most drawings get wrong.
