Spring Coloring Pages

Spring arrives unevenly. One week the cherry tree is out, the next it is raining sideways and everyone is indoors again with muddy boots by the door. These free printable spring coloring pages cover both kinds of day: blossom over a cottage bench and a jug of tulips on the table, but also children splashing in puddles, a bear holding an umbrella over its cub, and a duck family sheltering under a leaf while the rain comes down.

The rest of the season is here too. A mare stands with her foal in the buttercups, a fawn rests among ferns and bluebells, two baby goats climb a hay bale, and a fox cub looks out of its den. In the garden a boy plants seedlings, a mouse sows seeds at a potting bench, a badger in a sun hat digs the vegetable patch, and a cat sleeps in a greenhouse full of trays. By the water, a frog sits over a pond of tadpoles and a heron waits on a jetty.

Which pages suit a preschool class?

Much of this set is busier, so it is worth checking before printing thirty copies. The pages with one clear subject and an open sky are the next step up, around five years old: the children in raincoats, the bear and its cub under the umbrella, the rainbow over the village, the piglets in the mud. From about seven, children take the farm and garden scenes, where the mare and foal stand in a stable doorway full of small details and the badger's vegetable rows go on to the fence.

Spring coloring pages for adults

Lots of detail keeps the other end, where the page fills up with petals, leaves and small parts. The densest open the band.

Blossom is what makes these slow: every flower on the magnolia, the apple tree and the cherry branch around the bird's nest is outlined on its own. They reward sharp colored pencils more than markers, which flood the tight gaps (the colored pencil guide compares sets). For flowers without the scenery around them, the flower coloring pages go further into single blooms and bouquets.

Which colors make blossom look like blossom?

Resist coloring every petal pink. Real cherry and apple blossom is mostly white with a pink edge, so leave the middle of each petal as bare paper and add a light pink stroke on the outside. Magnolia is pale pink or cream with a darker purple base. The sky behind blossom works best pale blue, which makes the white petals stand out without coloring them at all.

Spring greens are yellower than summer ones: start new leaves and grass in light yellow-green and save dark green for ferns and hedges. In the rain pages, a single bright raincoat or umbrella against gray-blue puddles does more than coloring everything brightly, and in the tulip field, rows of alternating red, yellow and pink read from across the room.

Using the garden pages in a classroom

The tulip bulbs drawn under the soil show what happens before a flower appears: the bulb, the roots spreading down, the shoot breaking the surface. Print it at the start of a planting project and let children color the soil brown and the part above ground in spring colors, then plant real bulbs in pots the same week. The seedlings in a raised bed, the mouse at the potting bench and the greenhouse all show the next steps, and the caterpillars and butterflies over the flower bed or the frog with its tadpoles start a lesson on life cycles.

What is actually happening outside

Spring pages are more interesting when a child knows what the drawing is a picture of.

Blossom comes before leaves on most fruit trees, which is why a blossom sheet shows bare dark branches carrying flowers. Drawing it with a full canopy of green is the commonest mistake, and it is worth pointing out: the tree spends its energy on flowers first, leaves second.

Bulbs are already finished when you see them. A daffodil spent the previous summer storing food underground, which is why it can flower before there is any warmth. That is also why you are told not to cut the leaves off afterwards.

Frogspawn floats, toadspawn sinks. Frogs lay in clumps, toads in long strings wound round weed. A pond sheet with a clump in it is a frog pond.

Lambs arrive in spring for a simple reason: grass starts growing then, so the ewe can feed them.

And the rain: April showers are convection showers, which is why they are heavy, short and often sunny at both ends, and why spring is when rainbows are most common. The rainbow coloring pages are next door for exactly that reason.
