Plants vs. Zombies Coloring Pages

Plants vs. Zombies is the garden game where the lawn is a battlefield and the defenders are vegetables. These Plants vs. Zombies coloring pages draw the plants that hold the line, the zombies shuffling toward the house, and a few quiet garden moments between waves.

The plants come first. Peashooter stands on the checkered lawn, and a whole row of Peashooters and Sunflowers waits beside the lawn mower. Sunflower smiles next to a watering can, Wall-nut sits calmly between the paving stones and piles up with others into a wall, Cherry Bomb bounces along a path, Chomper leans over a flower bed with its teeth out, Potato Mine pokes up a periscope, Snow Pea drips with icicles, Squash frowns on a paving stone, Cactus stands guard by the driveway, and Cabbage-pult waits in a flower pot on the roof. A row of mushrooms sleeps under the stars, plants stand on lily pads in the pool, one blows a gust of leaves across a path, and another peeks out of a carved pumpkin.

Then the zombies. Conehead Zombie crosses the lawn with a traffic cone on his head, Buckethead Zombie comes through the garden gate, a zombie floats in a pool ring, a dancing zombie in a sparkly jacket leads a line of backup dancers, Football Zombie charges across the yard in his helmet, Balloon Zombie drifts over the hedge, Snorkel Zombie climbs out of the pool in flippers, and a huge Gargantuar lumbers along with an Imp on his shoulder. One zombie is even pushing a trolley of potted plants.

The rest is the garden between battles: a chibi Sunflower and Wall-nut sharing a watermelon, a greenhouse bench of smiling sprouts, a wheelbarrow of spare cones by the shed, plants in scarves on a snowy lawn, a garden at sunrise, a sprout on a kitchen windowsill, bamboo breaking through the paving, a mandala of Sunflowers and pea pods, and a border of pea pods, Sunflowers and cones.

How the game works

Plants vs. Zombies came out in 2009, made by PopCap Games. Zombies walk in from the right side of the screen in rows, heading for the house, and the player plants defenders on a grid of lawn squares to stop them. Sunflowers produce sun, the currency used to buy more plants, so every good garden starts with a row of them. Peashooters fire peas down their row, Wall-nuts stand in the way and take the bites, and Cherry Bombs clear a crowded patch in one go. If a zombie reaches the end of a row, the lawn mower sweeps it away, but only once.

The levels move from the front lawn in daytime to the lawn at night, where the mushrooms wake up, then to the backyard pool, the fog and finally the roof, where plants need flower pots. Many of the pages follow that same order.

Crazy Dave and the games that followed

The player is helped by Crazy Dave, the neighbor with a saucepan on his head, who sells new plants from the back of his car and talks in nonsense. He came back in Plants vs. Zombies 2 in 2013, which sent the lawn through time, from ancient Egypt to a pirate ship and the Wild West, each era with its own plants and its own zombies. The Garden Warfare games turned the battle into a shooter where players can pick a side and play as a zombie, and Plants vs. Zombies Heroes made it a card game. The plants on these pages are the originals, the ones every version still starts with.

Getting the plants and zombies right

• Peashooter is bright green with a darker green leaf behind its head. Snow Pea is the same shape in pale icy blue.
• Sunflower has yellow petals and a brown face.
• Wall-nut is light brown with a darker shell edge.
• Cherry Bomb is two red cherries with a green stem.
• Chomper has a purple head with white teeth and a green stem.
• Squash is green with a slightly darker bottom.
• Zombies have gray-green skin, a brown jacket, a white shirt and a red tie. The cone is orange and the bucket silver gray.

Quick plants and crowded lawns

The simplest pages have one character large and a light background, like Squash, Cherry Bomb and Potato Mine. Quick to color, above the grid, begins with:

Plan a lawn on paper

Draw a grid of five rows and nine columns on a big sheet of paper, the shape of the game's front lawn. Cut out the colored plants and zombies, then take turns: one player places plants, the other walks zombies in from the right, one square per turn. Sunflowers must go first, because in the game nothing else can be bought without them. It is a gentle strategy game for two, and a good use for every plant page once it has been colored.

Printing a lawn's worth

Each page is a free PDF drawn on A4 at 300 dpi. Print at full size on A4, or with "fit to page" on US Letter, which trims the drawing by about six percent and keeps every leaf inside.
