Five Nights at Freddy's Coloring Pages

Most drawings of these characters are a face on an empty background. These Five Nights at Freddy's coloring pages put the whole pizzeria in: the stage with its curtains and party tables, the workshop with spare heads on a shelf, the prize corner, the arcade, the corridor with its vents. The four everyone asks for are all here, each one busy with something. Freddy sings into a microphone and conducts three small animatronics. Bonnie plays guitar in the music room and leans around a restroom door. Chica carries a pizza between the tables and slides one into a brick oven. Foxy stands on the Pirate Cove stage, takes the wheel of a play ship, climbs the rigging and squeezes out of a wall vent.

Be warned before you print: these are busy pages. Most sheets are a whole room, and a room drawn in line art is a lot of small shapes. That is the point of the collection, but it means it suits a child who already colors rather than one who is learning.

The four sheets a younger child can finish

Only a handful of these are quick, and there is no use pretending otherwise. Quick to color above the grid keeps them: the two portraits, the plush bear on the window sill and the microphone in front of the curtain. One big shape each, almost nothing behind.

Hand one of those to a five-year-old who wants to join in, and keep the rooms for whoever has an hour.

Getting the four colors right, because they will check

A child who knows these characters will correct you, so it is worth a minute before the pencils come out.

• Freddy is brown, a warm mid brown, with a black top hat and black bow tie and a paler muzzle and belly. Leave the muzzle almost uncolored so the face reads.
• Bonnie is purple, lighter on the muzzle, ears and belly, with a red bow tie and a red guitar.
• Chica is yellow with an orange beak and feet and a white bib. The bib is the brightest thing on her, so leave it white and put the color around it.
• Foxy is red-brown with a white muzzle, a black eyepatch and a silver hook. His trousers are brown and torn.
• Everything else is a room: wood floors, brick, curtains, tiles. Those take any color you like, and a dark red curtain behind a brown bear is what makes the stage look like a stage.

For a long afternoon

Lots of detail keeps the other end of the set, and here that is most of it: the band on stage with its drum kit and lighting bar, the mall corridor, the ball pit, the repair bench with its spare heads, the prize corner with shelves of plush bears. Each one is an hour of small shapes.

Sharp colored pencils beat markers in spaces that small. A child who finishes a room and wants another will find the same kind of work in the Minecraft pages.

Is this too frightening for a young child?

These are drawn cute rather than creepy: round eyes, wide smiles, nothing torn and nobody hurt. The scariest thing in the set is a fox coming out of a vent, and he is grinning.

That said, the mood comes from the coloring more than the drawing. A child who wants it eerie should work dark: a black-blue corridor, a deep red curtain, gray tiles. A child who wants it friendly should keep everything bright, and the birthday table, the cupcake and the ice cream cart are already on that side.

A party, and a book for the bag

The birthday sheets sit together: the table laid with pizza and paper hats, Chica bringing out a cupcake with a candle, the ice cream cart under its parasol. Print one each for a table of children and nobody gets the same page.

Drawing a stage, and keeping it friendly

These are animatronic characters on a stage, and the setting is doing a lot of the work on these pages.

The stage lighting is the thing to notice. A spotlit stage has a bright pool in the middle and dark at the edges, so keep the color strongest on the characters and let the curtains, floor and walls fade towards the corners. Curtains especially should be one color with deep folds, not flat.

The characters themselves are built from simple solids: a rounded body, cylindrical limbs, a big head. They are machines dressed as animals, and the detail that says so is the joint lines and panel seams, which should be drawn darker rather than colored over. Leaving those lines visible is what makes them read as animatronic rather than as soft toys.

The eyes are large and glossy with a white highlight to leave bare.

On palette: each character has a fixed color, and the stage around them is warm: reds, golds, browns. Keeping the background warm and the characters at full strength stops the page going muddy, which is the commonest problem with a scene this dark.
