Happy Birthday Coloring Pages

Birthday sheets get printed in a hurry, usually the night before, and usually for a table of children who are about to be given cake. These free printable happy birthday coloring pages are drawn for that: thick lines that survive a low cartridge, a band of fast sheets for the youngest, and a dozen pages that spell the words out so a child can color a card and give it to somebody the same afternoon.

The lettered ones come in several shapes. A banner of flagged letters strung above a sofa. Two lines of lettered flags across a garden fence. Piped icing across a round cake under a ring of candles. A card standing open on a shelf above wrapped presents. A tag swinging from a box under a full bow. A scroll unrolled beside a puppy in a party hat.

The sheets left blank on purpose

A couple of pages have no words at all, and they are the most useful in the collection. One is a party table laid with paper hats, plates and a jug of juice, under a completely plain banner. The other is three lines of blank photo frames hanging from pegs above a shelf.

Both are there to be filled in: a name, an age, a drawing of the person. That is the sheet to print when the child having the birthday is the one doing the coloring.

For the youngest at the table

Quick to color above the grid keeps the roomy sheets and opens on the quickest of them.

• Piping the top of a layer cake
• A wrapped box with a gift tag
• A bear holding up a banner

Print three or four different ones rather than thirty copies of a single sheet. Children like to choose, and nobody compares their cake with the cake next to them.

Coloring the lettering so it reads

• Flat, strong color inside each letter. No shading. A letter shaded in three tones stops being legible from across a room.
• Two colors alternating letter by letter beats eight different ones. It looks deliberate and it takes half the time.
• Leave the paper inside the counters of the letters and around the outside. The white is what makes them stand out.
• Balloons take one color each with a small bare patch left as a shine, and the strings left uncolored.
• Cake: the icing pale, the candles bright, and the flames left as bare paper with just a ring of orange at the base.
• Confetti is the place to use every pencil in the tin. It is the only element on these pages where randomness helps.

Making a card out of a sheet

Some of these are drawn to be folded. Print on 160 gsm card rather than copy paper, color the front, fold it down the middle and write inside. A colored card from a child is worth more than a bought one and costs nothing to post inside a letter.

The gift tag sheet works the same way at a smaller size: color, cut round the tag, punch a hole and tie it to a real present.

Party games and the table

A handful of sheets are about the party rather than the birthday, and they are worth printing for older children: a donkey poster with a blindfold and a basket of paper tails, rows of open party bags waiting on a counter beside a bowl of sweets, a star pinata hanging from a beam with the stick waiting below, paper arrows leading down a hallway past a shoe rack, and a face painting table with a jar of brushes and a standing mirror.

The one you keep

Most birthday paper is in the bin by the evening. A colored sheet does not have to be, and a couple of these are drawn with that in mind.

The blank photo-frame sheet is the one to print every year. Color it, write the age in the middle of each frame, and glue in a photograph when it is developed. Done for several years running and kept in the same folder, it turns into the record nobody remembers to keep.

The party table sheet under its plain banner does the same job on the day: pass it round before the cake and let every guest write their name in the banner. It is a guest book that a six-year-old will actually fill in, and it costs one sheet of paper.

For the presents rather than the memory: a colored sheet cut down and wrapped round a jam jar makes a holder for pencils, and the wrapped-box sheet, trimmed and folded, becomes a gift tag that matches the card. Print the card sheet on 160 gsm card, fold it, and it stands up on a shelf instead of flopping over.

And the sheets nobody expects to use: the party bags and the punch bowl are worth coloring the week before as a way of deciding what the party will actually have on the table. It is planning that looks like playing.

Where the birthday customs come from

The things on these pages have traceable origins, and some of them are surprisingly recent.

Candles on a cake are usually traced to eighteenth-century Germany, where a child's birthday cake carried a candle for each year plus one for the year to come, lit in the morning and kept burning all day. Blowing them out and making a wish came with it.

The song is the most sung in the English language and began as a classroom greeting called Good Morning to All, written in 1893 by two sisters in Kentucky. The birthday words were attached later, and the copyright over them was fought in court until 2016, when a judge put the song firmly in the public domain.

Party hats are cone-shaped for no better reason than that a cone is the easiest thing to make from a flat sheet of paper, which is also why they are easy to make from a colored page.

The piñata came to Mexico from Spain, and to Spain apparently from China by way of Italy. Its original form had seven points for seven vices, and breaking it blindfolded stood for faith overcoming them.

And the cards: sending printed greetings for birthdays only became normal once postage got cheap, in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The busier pages, for grown-ups

For the other extreme, Lots of detail leads with the page that has the most going on.
