Wonder Woman Coloring Pages

Wonder Woman is a warrior who would rather help than fight, and these Wonder Woman coloring pages show both sides of her: the Amazon with her lasso and bracelets, and the hero who kneels on a sidewalk to tie a boy's shoelace.

The action pages are full of strength. Diana stands on a cliff above the sea, crosses her bracelets to block a beam of light over the city, holds her golden lasso between marble columns, gallops on horseback through the surf at sunrise, spars with a wooden staff in a training yard, lifts a huge stone block to free a kitten, crosses a rope bridge over a canyon, soars up through the clouds, flies the invisible jet over snowy mountains, drives a chariot behind two galloping horses and stands guard on the rubble above a city skyline. Armored Amazon riders race across a stadium field, and one page shows the temples and rooftops of her island home.

The quieter pages are some of the most beautiful. She teaches a young girl archery in an orchard, braids a girl's hair on the temple steps, walks along a low wall with three children in the park, plants an olive tree beside a stone well, carries wood up the steps to a hilltop temple, lights a row of oil lamps, hammers a shield at the forge, rises from a lake among water lilies, wades through reeds with dragonflies, walks through autumn leaves and falling snow in her long cloak, and welcomes an eagle landing on her arm. In the city she catches a flower pot falling from a balcony, crouches on a rainy rooftop beside a gargoyle and holds her shield over her head like an umbrella in a market street. She also appears as Diana in a ball gown on a grand staircase, in a detailed portrait, and as a chibi Wonder Woman waving. A lasso mandala and a page of her two bracelets are there for patient colorers.

Who Wonder Woman is

Wonder Woman was created by the psychologist William Moulton Marston and drawn by the artist Harry G. Peter. She first appeared in All Star Comics #8, published at the end of 1941, and got her own comic the following year. She is Princess Diana of Themyscira, raised on a hidden island of Amazon warriors, who leaves her home to help the world outside.

Her equipment is part of the story:

• The Lasso of Truth, a golden rope that makes anyone caught in it tell the truth.
• The bracelets, which she uses to deflect blows and projectiles.
• The tiara, sometimes thrown like a blade.
• The invisible jet, which appears in several of these pages as a see-through plane.

She is one of the longest running superheroes in comics, alongside Superman and Batman.

Wonder Woman's colors

Her classic costume uses three colors, and they are easy to get right:

• Red for the top and the boots.
• Blue for the skirt or shorts, often with small white stars.
• Gold for the tiara, the belt, the emblem on her chest and the lasso.

Her bracelets are silver, her hair is black, and her tiara carries a small red star. Recent versions of the costume are darker, with deep red, navy and bronze instead of bright primaries; both work. The Amazon armor on the riders and at the forge looks lovely in bronze and gold, and the island scenes in white marble, olive green and a deep Aegean blue.

Big heroes and detailed scenes

Most pages here are detailed, with a full costume and a real setting, which suits older children and adults. The chibi Wonder Woman and the pages with one figure against a simple background are the easiest ones, listed under Quick to color, above the grid:

A hero who helps

Wonder Woman is a good character to talk about kindness and courage together. Many of these pages show her helping rather than fighting: freeing a kitten, catching a falling pot, tying a shoelace, teaching archery, braiding hair, walking children home. Ask a child which page shows the bravest thing, and which shows the kindest, and whether they are the same. A finished page with a small act of kindness written underneath ("I helped my brother with his shoes") makes a good poster for a bedroom door.
