Power Rangers Coloring Pages

The Power Rangers have been on television for more than thirty years, so the child asking for them may well have a parent who shouted "It's Morphin Time!" in the nineties. These Power Rangers coloring pages draw the classic suits, with the diamond pattern on the chest and the toothed visor, in scenes that go beyond the fight.

The team pages come first: five Rangers lined up on a rooftop, each helmet a different shape, and the whole team gathered around the round table of their base, with maps, a model of the city and a glowing crystal in the middle. Two Rangers spar on a training mat. The machines get their own pages: a giant robot standing in the harbor between cranes and ships, the same kind of robot kneeling to hold out its hand with a Ranger standing on the palm, a robot sabertooth tiger crouched on a plateau, a cockpit full of switches and screens, and a hover bike under repair.

Most pages follow one Ranger through an ordinary day of training and patrol. They stand on a cliff at sunrise, backflip over a brick wall, climb a rope, do a handstand on parallel bars, stretch on a hilltop, meditate under a stone arch, slide down a ladder in a tower shaft and leap between rooftops at night. Then the quieter moments: riding a motorcycle along the coast, running on the beach with a small dog, crouching to look at a starfish, diving by a reef, planting a tree in a park, helping a child down from a branch, sitting on a bench with a little robot, eating lunch on a rooftop with the helmet set aside. Pick a color, pick a Ranger

The drawings leave the suit color open, and that is the best part. A Ranger is a color first: red, blue, yellow, pink and black on the first team, green and white soon after, and many more in the series since. Before starting, ask a child which color they are, and every Ranger on every page becomes theirs.

The suit itself is easy to get right once the color is chosen:

• The suit is one solid color, with a white diamond pattern across the chest and shoulders.
• Gloves and boots are white, with a band of diamonds in the suit color at the cuffs and the tops of the boots.
• The belt is white with a silver or gold buckle in the middle.
• The helmet matches the suit, and the visor stays black. On these pages it is already filled in.

On the team pages, give each Ranger a different color and keep the order the same everywhere. It makes the team read at a glance, the way it does on screen.

Where the Power Rangers came from

The show began in 1993 in the United States, but it was built on a Japanese series. The American version filmed new scenes with American teenagers and borrowed the fight scenes in costume from the Japanese Super Sentai shows, which is why the Rangers never show their faces in battle. The first team had five teenagers who turned into Rangers with a power coin, each linked to a dinosaur, and giant machines called Zords that joined together into a Megazord.

Each Ranger of that first team had an animal, and a Zord shaped like it: the Red Ranger a Tyrannosaurus, the Blue Ranger a Triceratops, the Black Ranger a Mastodon, the Pink Ranger a Pterodactyl and the Yellow Ranger a Sabertooth Tiger. That is why a robot sabertooth tiger has a page of its own here, and why dinosaur heads turn up among the helmets on the pattern page. A child who picked yellow can color the tiger in the same shade, and the page becomes their Zord.

A new season with a new team has followed almost every year since, with different themes, from ninjas to space to dinosaurs again. The classic look of the first series, with its diamonds and its toothed visor, is the one these pages use.

Simple Rangers and busy bases

The easiest pages have one Ranger, large, with an open background, like the helmet portrait or the Ranger stretching on the hill. Quick to color, above the grid, begins with:

The dense ones are full of machinery and brickwork: the robot in the harbor, the hangar full of crates, the command table with its maps. Lots of detail begins with:

A Ranger party for five or more

The pages fit a Power Rangers birthday almost by themselves. Give every guest a color when they arrive, a sticker or a wristband will do, and then hand out pages to be colored in that color only. The team page on the rooftop and the round table page make good group projects, one Ranger per child.

The border page, with helmets, gloves and boots all around an empty oval, becomes the invitation: write the date, the time and the place in the middle, and let the birthday child choose which Ranger colors the border.

Printing a squad

Every page is a free PDF drawn on A4 at 300 dpi. A4 prints at full size; US Letter needs "fit to page", which shrinks the drawing by about six percent and keeps the helmet crests inside the margins.
