Care Bears Coloring Pages

These Care Bears coloring pages are fan-made drawings of the whole cast up in the clouds, and each bear is drawn with the tummy badge that says who it is. That badge is the thing to look at first, because in a black and white drawing it is the only way to tell one round bear from another.

Cheer Bear slides down a rainbow arch with stars trailing behind her, turns a cartwheel through a meadow of smiling star flowers and blows a kiss straight at you. Grumpy Bear waters a row of cloud flowers, builds a cloud car with a spanner and scowls out of his own portrait. Funshine Bear stretches out on a cloud in sunglasses with a cold drink and flies a kite shaped like a smiling sun. Tenderheart Bear hangs paper hearts along a cloud fence and hands umbrellas to two small bears as the rain comes through.

The rest have their own pages too. Share Bear pours two milkshakes, sets a picnic and rolls out star biscuits at a cloud oven. Wish Bear watches the sky through a telescope and tosses a star into a fountain. Good Luck Bear plants clovers and climbs a ladder of stars towards a smiling moon. Bedtime Bear tucks a sleepy star into bed and pegs more of them on a washing line. Love-a-Lot Bear carries heart balloons and posts heart sealed letters into a cloud mailbox. Harmony Bear cranks a music box, Champ Bear times a line of star jumps with a stopwatch, Birthday Bear carries a tiered cake, and Friend Bear skips a rope. Three more sheets show the group together: three bears driving a cloud car down a rainbow road, two on a swing hung from a rainbow, and four rolling a giant snowball.

This one is for young children

Worth being straight about, because it decides who should print it. Almost every sheet here is in the quick band. One or two round bears on a cloud, thick outlines, and very little behind them. That is what the drawings are, and a four or five year old can finish one without help.

Quick to color above the grid keeps them, and it keeps most of the collection:

If you want something that takes an evening, this is not the page for it. The bear coloring pages have real grizzlies and pandas with fur drawn strand by strand, and the cozy coloring pages are full of rooms and clutter. Both have proper dense bands.

The badges, and the colors that go with them

Here is the thing that makes or breaks a Care Bear page. Each bear is one flat body color with a pale muzzle and a pale belly patch, and the badge on the tummy is the only part with several colors in it. Get those two right and the rest is easy.

• Cheer Bear: pink, with a rainbow on her tummy.
• Grumpy Bear: blue, with a rain cloud and little raindrops.
• Funshine Bear: yellow, with a smiling sun.
• Tenderheart Bear: warm brown, with a single red heart.
• Good Luck Bear: green, with a four leaf clover.
• Share Bear: lilac, with two lollipops crossed.
• Bedtime Bear: pale blue, with a sleeping moon.
• Wish Bear: turquoise, with a shooting star.
• Love-a-Lot Bear: deep pink, with two hearts.
• Harmony Bear: violet, with a smiling flower.

Champ Bear carries a trophy, Birthday Bear a cupcake and Friend Bear a pair of flowers, all three in warm oranges and golds. If you are not sure of a shade, it matters far less than keeping the body one even tone: a Care Bear colored in two tones stops looking like a Care Bear.

Leave the muzzle, the inner ears and the belly patch as bare paper. That contrast is what makes the face read from across a room, and it is the mistake most often made on these pages.

Pastels, and why they are harder than they look

This whole collection runs on pale color, and pale color is the thing most people get wrong.

A pastel is not a pale pencil, it is light pressure. A pink pencil pressed hard gives a strong pink. The same pencil pressed lightly, in two passes rather than one, gives the soft shade these designs need. Children instinctively press hard, so this is worth demonstrating rather than explaining.

Leave bare paper inside shapes. A pastel fill that reaches every edge looks heavy. Stopping slightly short, especially where the light would fall, keeps it soft.

Pastels need one darker anchor or the page floats away. The belly badge, the nose, the eyes: color one thing at full strength and the rest holds together.

The designs themselves are simple: a round body, short limbs, a large head, a mark on the belly that identifies each character. Each one has an assigned color, which makes them straightforward to color as a set, and the belly badge is the part worth saving until last and doing carefully.

Clouds and rainbows fill most backgrounds, and both should stay paler than the characters so the figures come forward.

The clouds are the easy part

Nearly every sheet is set in the sky, which is a gift for a small child: clouds can be left white. Color the bear, color the badge, put a pale blue or nothing at all behind it, and the page is finished. For the rainbows, going in order red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet gives the familiar result, but there is no reason a child cannot choose their own order. Thick crayons suit these pages better than pencils, because every shape is wide.
