Turtle Coloring Pages

Children ask for turtles and mean three different animals: the flippered one that swims, the domed one that eats lettuce in a garden, and the one that suns itself on a log in a pond. These free printable turtle coloring pages have all three, drawn as themselves rather than merged into one generic shell, and the difference is worth pointing out at the table because it is visible on the page: flippers, stumpy feet, or webbed claws.

The sea turtles get the reef, the seagrass and the open water: one feeding at a coral head, one riding the face of a breaking wave, one passing an old anchor with a shoal scattering around it. The tortoises get the garden: a strawberry in a raised bed, two meeting nose to nose on a gravel path, one walking down the ramp of its hutch, one burrowing into a heap of leaves in a shed.

Three animals, three levels of patience

• Toddlers: the turtle drawn from straight above, all four legs out, every plate large.
• Preschool: the tortoise in profile, the two stacked on a rock, the snail riding a shell.
• School age: the hatchling sheets and the reef scenes, where the coral and the weed give the page a background.
• Adults: the snapping turtle, the shoal, the sunken bicycle.

Making a shell look like a shell

• Base color first, seams second. Fill every plate in the same green or brown, then go round each one with a darker pencil. The seam is what makes it a shell.
• One pale patch per plate, left near the middle, and the shell turns domed instead of flat.
• Sea turtle: olive and brown plates, a yellow-cream underside, and the head and flippers covered in small pale scales outlined in darker pencil.
• Tortoise: warmer, yellow-brown with dark rings, and each plate carries growth lines you can follow with the pencil.
• Water goes pale and uneven, with the ripples left as bare paper. The seagrass and the coral are where the strong color belongs.

Hatchlings, and the sheet worth talking about

The nest sheets are the ones teachers use. One shows the moment a clutch breaks: a dozen hatchlings pouring out of the sand and heading down the beach, with a grown turtle in the foreground. The other goes closer, a single hatchling half out of its shell beside the dug-open eggs.

Reef scenes, for anyone who wants an hour

The reef scenes are the ones to keep for an evening: a turtle banking under a wide shoal above beds of soft coral, with several hundred separate shapes to fill. A narrow palette holds it together, three blues and two greens repeated, with one warm color kept for the coral.

The shell is its skeleton

A turtle cannot leave its shell, and the reason is that the shell is the animal's ribs and spine, fused and flattened and grown outwards. There is no turtle inside it in the way cartoons suggest.

The top is the carapace, the underside the plastron, joined at the sides by a bridge. The plates on the outside are called scutes and are made of the same material as your fingernails. On many species the scutes carry growth rings, which is why the tortoise sheets in this collection have concentric lines on each plate: they are worth coloring, and they are roughly a record of good and bad years.

The differences between the three kinds on these pages are all about where they live. Sea turtles have flippers they cannot retract and a light, flattened shell built for distance. Tortoises have a high domed shell, stumpy elephantine feet and live entirely on land. Freshwater turtles sit between the two, with webbed clawed feet.

Two facts children ask for. A turtle's sex is often decided by temperature while the eggs are in the sand: warmer nests produce females. And sea turtles return to lay on the same beach where they hatched, decades later.

What to do with the shells once they are colored

A turtle shell is a mosaic, and a colored one is worth more than a place on the fridge door.

The plainest idea is the best one here: cut a finished turtle out, then cut the shell itself into its plates along the seams, and glue them back down on a fresh sheet of paper with a few millimetres between them. It turns into stained glass, and it teaches a child what the seams were for.

Hatchling sheets have their own use. Color a dozen, cut them out, and run them across a wall from a paper nest towards a paper sea. It takes a morning, it fills a corridor, and it is the clearest way anybody has found to explain why turtles lay so many eggs.

Two quieter ones: a tortoise cut out and glued to the lid of a box makes a box for small treasures, which is what children use tortoises for anyway; and the turtle drawn from directly above, printed on card and colored on both sides, hangs flat under a lamp and turns slowly in the warm air.
