Kawaii Coloring Pages

Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, and in drawing it means something very precise: take any object, give it two dot eyes, a small curved mouth and a pink blush on each cheek, and it becomes a character. These kawaii coloring pages apply that rule to everything in reach, from breakfast to the laundry.

The kitchen comes first. A round strawberry sits with its legs stretched out, a stack of pancakes smiles under a pat of butter while even the syrup drips grin, an ice cream cone laughs under a cherry, and a cupcake wears a smiling cherry on its frosting. A doughnut dozes with a bite out of its side, a milk carton stands with two striped straws, a teapot and its cup share a table, a ramen bowl smiles with chopsticks standing in the broth, and a tall sushi roll waits beside soy sauce and ginger. Two avocado halves stand side by side on little feet, and a round loaf of bread is wrapped in a knitted scarf.

The animals are the soft ones: a cat loaf that is half cat and half bread, a round cat with a bell on its collar, a puppy in a teacup, a panda munching bamboo, a bunny hugging a carrot as tall as itself, a frog holding a lily pad over its head like an umbrella, a bear cub in a strawberry costume and a penguin in earmuffs on a block of ice. Then the sky: a sun in sunglasses, a moon in a nightcap, a rainbow resting on two clouds, and a sleepy cloud raining onto a sleepy puddle. The rest is everyday things that were never meant to smile: a pencil, a notebook, a school backpack, a camera, headphones, a washing machine with socks tumbling inside, a toaster, a hot air balloon with a bear and a duck in the basket, and a rocket among smiling stars.

Why a toaster gets a face

Giving objects a personality is an old habit in Japan. Folklore has a name for it, tsukumogami: household things, an umbrella, a lantern, a pair of sandals, that were said to wake up and gain a spirit after a hundred years of service. The modern version is gentler and faster. In the 1970s teenage girls began writing in a round, bubbly hand full of little hearts and faces, and it spread so quickly that some schools tried to ban it. Stationery companies followed, and in the mid-1970s a small white cat appeared on a coin purse. By the time the Hello Kitty coloring pages were a thing anyone would search for, kawaii had become a way of looking at the whole world.

That is why the everyday pages here matter as much as the animals. A child who colors a smiling washing machine is doing exactly what the style has always done: noticing an ordinary thing and deciding it is a friend.

Real colors or candy colors

Every page in this set can go two ways, and it is worth deciding before the first crayon.

Real colors keep the object recognizable: a red strawberry with yellow seeds, a green avocado with a brown stone, a golden pancake stack with darker edges where they browned. This suits younger children, who like to get things "right", and it makes a nice matching game: which crayon is a watermelon?

Candy colors are the other kawaii tradition, where a toaster is mint, a camera is lilac and a backpack is peach. The trick is to pick one main pastel and one deeper accent for each page and nothing else: a mint toaster with a coral slice of toast, a lilac camera with a darker purple strap. Two colors look designed; six look like a test of every pencil in the box.

Either way, do the cheeks last. The small ovals under each pair of eyes take a pink or coral, colored in tiny circles so the edge stays round, and that single touch is what makes a finished kawaii drawing look alive. The eyes are already solid black, so the face needs nothing more.

Pages for small hands

Most of this collection is quick to color: one object, thick outlines, big open shapes and very little in the background. That makes it a good first set for a child of three or four, and a relaxing one for anyone older who wants to finish a page in a single sitting. Quick to color, above the grid, starts with the simplest:

The pages with a little more going on are the ones with a setting around the character: the sushi plate with its side dishes, the mushroom among tufts of grass and pebbles, the loaf in its knitted scarf, and the camera with its patterned strap. They suit a child who has outgrown single shapes but still wants a cute subject.

A weather chart for the classroom

The sky pages make a set on their own. Color the sun in sunglasses, the sleepy rain cloud, the rainbow on its clouds and the moon in its nightcap, cut them out, and pin them in a row under a paper arrow. Each morning a child moves the arrow to today's weather. The moon covers the question "what happens at night?", which always comes up, and the faces keep a gray day from feeling gloomy.

Stickers, bookmarks and lunchbox notes

Kawaii drawings were made for small paper things, and the finished pages still work that way.

Stickers. Color a character, then cut around it leaving a thin white border about as wide as a pencil line. That white edge is what makes a cutout read as a sticker. Cover the front with clear packing tape, trim, and stick it down with double-sided tape on a notebook or a water bottle.

Bookmarks. The tall pages, the milk carton, the cactus, the rocket, fit a strip of card with a ribbon through a punched hole.

Lunchbox notes. The food pages, cut small, make a note tucked in beside a sandwich. A smiling sushi roll or a sleepy doughnut says more than a written message to a child who cannot read yet.

The school pages, pencil, notebook and backpack, make a welcome sheet for the first day of term, and the teapot and teacup go on a card for someone who loves tea.

Printing and more cute sets

The PDFs are drawn for A4 paper at 300 dpi, so an A4 printer takes them at actual size, while a US Letter printer needs "fit to page", which costs the drawing about six percent of its size and nothing else.
