4th of July Coloring Pages

The Fourth of July is a whole day, not just the fireworks at the end of it, and these 4th of July coloring pages follow it from the morning parade to the last burst over the lake. They are made for the waiting moments: before the parade passes, while the grill heats up, and in the long hour before it is dark enough for fireworks.

The parade comes first: a marching drummer in a plumed hat with a big bass drum, a tuba player in uniform, a float carrying a giant star, three children on scooters trailing streamers, and a bicycle decorated with paper stars against a picket fence. At home, a garland of stars hangs across the porch, a wagon of drinks rolls down the street with star balloons tied to it, and a tall striped hat with stars on its band waits on a folding chair.

Then the food, which is half the holiday: a picnic table with a checked cloth and a basket, a slice of watermelon with a bite out of it, a kettle grill with burgers and corn, two hot dogs with zigzags of mustard, a plate of corn on the cob, vegetable skewers, a pitcher of lemonade, pancakes topped with a star of berries, a lattice pie in a picnic basket and an apple pie cooling on the windowsill.

The afternoon is spent outside: a sailboat with a striped sail, a canoe on a pebble shore, a duck family by a beach umbrella, a golden retriever in a bandana beside the cooler and another leaping for a flying disc, a girl with a pinwheel, a drum kit set up on the grass and a hot air balloon drifting over a river town. A proud bald eagle sits on a pine branch, and a chibi eagle in a star hat waves a pinwheel. The evening belongs to the fireworks: bursts over the rooftops, a chrysanthemum that fills the page, a willow of drooping sparks over a lake, a boy drawing circles with a sparkler, and two children watching from the porch swing. A mandala of stars and fireworks and a stars and stripes border finish the set.

Why the Fourth, and not the second

The Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. John Adams was so sure that date would be remembered that he wrote to his wife that July 2 would be celebrated with "illuminations" from one end of the continent to the other. But the Declaration of Independence, the text explaining the break with Britain, was adopted two days later, and July 4 is the date printed at its top. That is the day Americans have celebrated ever since, and Adams's illuminations became the fireworks.

The bald eagle on these pages has been on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, and in 2024 it was finally made the official national bird by law.

The colors inside a firework

Every color in a firework comes from a different metal burning in the shell. Strontium makes red, barium makes green, sodium makes yellow and orange, and copper makes blue, which is the hardest color to get right and the reason good blue fireworks are rarer than red ones. The shapes have names too: a chrysanthemum is a round burst of long trails, like the one filling a page here, and a willow is a burst whose sparks hang down slowly like branches, like the one over the lake.

For red, white and blue that looks right on paper:

• Use a true red and a deep navy rather than a light blue; the flag's blue is dark.
• Leave the white as bare paper. It is the whitest white there is.
• On the stars and stripes border, color every other stripe red and keep the star field blue with white stars.

A crayon trick for night fireworks

The firework pages look magical with a crayon resist. Color the firework bursts and the sparkler trail with bright wax crayons, pressing hard, and leave the sky uncolored. Then brush thin black or dark blue watercolor, or diluted poster paint, over the whole page. The wax pushes the paint away, and the fireworks light up against a dark night sky. Use thick paper or card for this one, since thin printer paper wrinkles when wet.

Picnic pages and firework pages

The quickest pages keep one thing large on a clear background: the watermelon slice, the dog catching a disc, the boy with the sparkler. Quick to color, above the grid, begins with:

The picnic scenes are the most detailed, with checked cloths, fence slats and berries. Lots of detail begins with:

Placemats for the cookout

Print a stack of the food pages before the guests arrive and set one at every place on the picnic table, with a cup of crayons in the middle. Children color while the grill does its work, and each page can be signed and dated as a keepsake of the day. The star garland and parade pages can be cut out and taped to the porch railing.
