Who are the Minions from Despicable Me?

The Minions are the small yellow helpers of Gru, the villain who becomes a dad in Despicable Me (2010), the first film from Illumination. They were meant as background characters and stole the movie.

They got their own film, Minions (2015), followed by Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) and Despicable Me 4 (2024). Their voices come from Pierre Coffin, one of the directors, who built their language from bits of Spanish, French, Italian, English and pure nonsense. The one word everyone understands is banana.

Kevin, Stuart and Bob

The three Minions with the biggest roles are easy to tell apart, and kids like to name the one they are coloring:

• Kevin is tall, with two eyes and a sprout of hair.
• Stuart has a single big eye and parted hair. The one-eyed Minion standing in his overalls and the one building a snowman both have his shape.
• Bob is the short one, with two eyes of different colors and a teddy bear named Tim.

Minion colors, from goggles to boots

A Minion only needs a handful of colors, which makes these pages a good first try with a full set of markers:

• Skin: bright lemon yellow. A yellow highlighter works surprisingly well on large areas.
• Overalls: denim blue, with darker blue on the pockets and straps.
• Gloves and shoes: black.
• Goggles: silver gray frames on a black or dark brown strap.
• Eyes: brown, with the white shine left white. Give Bob one brown eye and one green.

Getting a smooth yellow

1. Color the whole body in light yellow first, in small circles.
2. Go over the sides and the area under the goggles a second time to make the Minion look round.
3. Add the blue overalls last, so the yellow never smudges into them.

Colored pencils also work: press lightly, then a little harder near the outline.

Silly Minion scenes to color

Most of this collection is slapstick, and that is what children ask for. A Minion rides a unicycle while balancing a tray of spare goggles. Another stands on a friend's head to reach a jar of fruit, and a whole tower of Minions tries the same trick a few pages later.

There is a bubble bath where one Minion pulls the plug, a washing machine with a Minion going round inside, and a pair of Minions wobbling in a boat at the top of a waterfall. Ask kids to tell the story of what happens next before they start coloring.

Minion Halloween and fall coloring pages

October is a big month for these sheets. A Minion carves a jack o'lantern, another flies past the moon on a broomstick, one goes trick or treating in a witch hat, and one hides under a ghost costume with a candy bucket. A lettering page shows a Minion knocking at a door under TRICK OR TREAT.
