Labubu and The Monsters: who made this little elf?

Labubu was created by the illustrator Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist who grew up in the Netherlands. The character first appeared in 2015 in his picture books The Monsters, a series inspired by Nordic fairy tales, as a mischievous forest elf with a kind heart.

In 2019, the Chinese toy company Pop Mart began selling Labubu figures, and the craze grew from there. The plush keychains, sold in sealed blind boxes so that nobody knows which version is inside, became a must-have bag accessory around the world in 2024 and 2025.

Labubu's nine teeth, and other details worth slowing down for

Labubu's famous grin shows nine sharp teeth, and they are the detail to treat with care. The easy method is to leave them alone:

1. Color the mouth around the teeth in a dark red or brown.
2. Leave every little triangle as bare white paper.
3. Add a light gray edge on one side of each tooth if you want them to stand out.

A younger child can skip all that and scribble the mouth dark. The grin still reads.

The ears are tall and pointed, with a paler inner part, and the eyes are big and round. The body is drawn with a soft, shaggy outline, so the fur already looks like fur before any color goes on.
