Frozen Coloring Pages

Elsa, Anna and Olaf are all here. These Frozen coloring pages are free to print, and they follow the sisters of Arendelle through snow days, holidays and a gallop across the sea on a water horse. The lines are thick and round, so a four-year-old can stay inside them and an older sister can still shade the folds of a cape.

Frozen and Frozen 2: the story behind the sheets

Frozen came out in 2013, made by Walt Disney Animation Studios and loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. Elsa, the elder sister, was born with the power to make ice and snow. After her powers slip out of control on the day she is crowned, she runs to the mountains and the kingdom of Arendelle freezes over. Her younger sister Anna goes after her.

The sequel, Frozen 2, followed in 2019 and takes the sisters north into an enchanted forest. Disney has announced Frozen III for November 2027, so a new wave of fans is on its way.

In the films, Idina Menzel voices Elsa, Kristen Bell voices Anna and Josh Gad voices Olaf.

Elsa coloring pages from Frozen

A big portrait shows Elsa with her braid over her shoulder, ready for careful shading. Queen Elsa stands in her crown and a gown with a long cape. In another page she lifts both arms while giant snowflakes rise over the fjord, the moment kids act out when they sing Let It Go. A calmer sheet shows her at the mouth of an ice cave.

Her hair is platinum blond, almost white, so a pale yellow pencil pressed lightly works better than a bright yellow marker. Her ice gown is a light turquoise blue, and the cape can stay nearly white with a few blue snowflakes. A silver gel pen over the crown gives it some shine.

Elsa and the Nokk, from Frozen 2

The Nokk is the water spirit of Frozen 2, a horse made of sea water that guards the Dark Sea. Disney took it from the nøkk of Scandinavian folklore, a shape-shifting water creature that lured travelers to the water's edge. On the sheet, Elsa rides it over the waves.

Color the Nokk in pale blue and aqua, darker toward the mane and tail, and leave thin white streaks in the waves so the water looks like it is moving. Kids who love the horse should also see the horse coloring pages, and the sea around it continues in the ocean coloring pages.

Anna of Arendelle coloring pages

Anna is the younger princess: warm, impatient and the one who never gives up on her sister. On her own sheet she stands in her dress, cape and tall boots, a quick page with big shapes. In a busier one she walks through the snowy village of Arendelle, with rooftops and snowbanks to fill.

Anna's colors:

• Hair: auburn or strawberry blond, in two braids. Orange and brown pencils layered together get close.
• Cape: deep magenta or berry pink.
• Dress: dark blue, with a lighter blouse under the bodice.
• Boots: dark brown.

Elsa and Anna coloring pages: the two sisters together

Many pages draw the sisters side by side, since both films turn on the bond between them. They skate hand in hand in front of the castle of Arendelle, read a big book in the castle library, sit in a wooden rowing boat and wave from a castle window above a box of flowers. As little girls, young Elsa and Anna jump in a puddle. A gentler page has them walking with a finger to their lips, keeping a secret.

Some of these pages draw Elsa and Anna very much alike, with the same face and similar dresses. Look at the hair to tell them apart: pale blond for Elsa, auburn for Anna. Give one sister cool blues and the other pinks and greens, and the page reads at a glance.

There are portraits as well: a big one of the sisters side by side, another cheek to cheek with hearts around, and scenes holding a sunflower or reaching up together toward a star. Olaf coloring pages: the Frozen snowman

Olaf is the snowman Elsa brings to life, and he dreams of summer without understanding what heat does to snow. His sheets leave a lot of open white space: Olaf standing with his stick arms out and a big smile, Olaf among pine trees in a snowy forest, Olaf smelling a daisy in a meadow, and Olaf on the beach with a cold drink under an umbrella.

His body is white, so the coloring happens around him. A pale blue shadow along one side keeps him from disappearing into the paper. Then:

1. Color his nose orange, like a carrot.
2. Use brown for the twig arms and the three twigs of hair on top.
3. Fill the buttons down his front in black, like lumps of coal.

Frozen Christmas, Halloween and holiday lettering pages

Many seasonal pages have the greeting drawn into the picture in hollow bubble letters, ready to fold into a card:

Color the letters in a shade that stands apart from Elsa's blue: orange in October, red in December, pink in February.

Easy Frozen pages for preschool, busy Arendelle scenes for big kids

For a three- or four-year-old, pick a page with one character and lots of white space: Olaf with his arms out, Anna standing in her boots, or Queen Elsa in her gown. Quick to color puts these single figures with big shapes at the front of the grid:

Planning a Frozen birthday or snow day

For a Frozen birthday party, print the HAPPY BIRTHDAY page for the guest of honor and a mix of Elsa, Anna and Olaf sheets for the others.

• Put out light blues, turquoise, purple and white for Elsa, magenta and auburn browns for Anna, and an orange for Olaf's nose.
• Add a silver or glitter gel pen or two, for crowns and snowflakes.
• Hang the finished pages along a string like a row of icicles, and send each one home in the party bag.
